Wrexham AFC’s story has been a fairytale, to say the least. Being ousted from the English League Two more than 13 years ago, no one would have foreseen them returning to the top tiers of the English Football League. Despite capturing the attention of both fans and rivals with their extraordinary achievements, it appears that there is one aspect that completely repels their competitors.
From regular updates of its owners, Ryan Reynolds, and Rob McElhenney, to clinching the most reputed awards, none can stop the Red Dragons from grabbing eyeballs. And this is the same reason that annoys Peterborough United chairperson Darragh MacAnthony. According to the Leader, MacAnthony expressed, “You open a newspaper and there’s stuff about the Championship, League One and League Two, but every week there’s stuff about Wrexham and it’s nauseating,” citing their media attention is the only thing that annoys him.

MacAnthony himself tasted success this season watching his team win the EFL Trophy yesterday. Peterborough beat Wycombe in the final, gaining widespread appreciation. However, the name of Wrexham dominates the headlines, according to the Irishman. Owned by two actors from the USA, Wrexham’s proactive media strategy is one reason for its rapid growth in popularity.
Showing the story of its transformation after landing in the hands of new owners, the docuseries Welcome to Wrexham is one of the main reasons for its rise to fame. With the gripping emotions of the most loyal fans to the owner’s lens of managing a club with limited resources, the documentary perfectly curated the fairytale to nonfiction. Fans appreciated the show that it went out to win five awards at the prestigious Emmys. Nevertheless, the fans’ obsession grows due to their rapid ascent and consistent performances, constantly on the cusp of promotion.

Apart from their coverage, MacAnthony lauds Wrexham for their incredible growth
Despite being critical of their promotions, MacAnthony is impressed by the owners’ management. With a strategy involving branding innovation as advertisements and shrewd deals, the rival boss attested to the growth of the club. He also said, “I saw their revenues the other day, and it was £15-£20million a year now as opposed to £5million when they first came in. Anyone who does that is a successful person at what they do,” complimenting them on their accomplished mission.
