The soccer game between USWNT and Portugal ended with the women’s side escaping the jaws of defeat. The stunning side failed to affect the game and almost lost it. Portugal came close to qualifying for the next round, but only for the post to deny them additional time. Therefore, star forward Alex Morgan explained the issues related to the team and how they did everything to win the game. Despite having 17 shots, the team wasted chances upfront.

After the match, Morgan arrived in front of the cameras to voice her opinions. And she certainly looked unhappy with the progress. Hopefully, they would take up a level notch for their knockout round fixtures.

In the post-match interview, Morgan discussed, “It’s just not going in the back of the net. So many corners. We’ve so many opportunities. We got the crosses in. I mean, just unlucky. Just falling through with shots, chances, making the right decisions, all that combined.” Morgan had a lot of chances in the game but failed to find the back of the net. She looked tired at the end, even though the team went all in for the victory.

She continued, “We just didn’t put the ball in the back of the net. And in the last few minutes, we had to hold it down. We had to get the result and move on, and now we look forward. You know players came in and really helped… We had so many game changers making the difference.” At the last minute, Portugal’s Capeta gets behind the USWNT defense and beat Alyssa Naeher, only for the post to deny her. That would have been curtains for the team.

Hence, it would have been shocking for the team to lose the game following their exit. Yet, the gods looked upon them, and the team would need to raise their levels to fulfill their hopes of completing a three-peat. In the round of 16, their performance against potential opponent Sweden will judge the USWNT’s progress. They look to win all their three group stage matches. It’s a team that can’t be taken lightly. Do you think USWNT will win that match?
