Can Pochettino replicate Ferguson's legacy with the USMNT if given enough time and support?

Don’t worry, it’s just the start. Mauricio Pochettino faced his first loss as the USMNT boss against Mexico in a tight affair in Guadalajara. Raul Jimenez and Cesar Huerta scored two goals to give El Tri a sensational victory. Hence, the pressure is on Pochettino to get the team set for the next match, with many pundits calling him out. But c’mon man. Have some patience pundits! Aidan Morris burned some words in favor of the Argentine coach.

Soccer fans don’t have patience these days. Think of Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger. Ferguson didn’t go straight away for Manchester United as the board initially decided to sack him first. But they stuck to their gut and the rest, as they say, is history. These two managers, in particular, stayed in their clubs for a long time and built an unmatched legacy for themselves. Hence, given time and space, Pochettino could make this squad into perennial winners. The 22-year-old midfielder Morris, put the process into detail very aptly.

According to Golazo America, Morris stated, “It’s early days. It’s tough you know. You work with such a talented coach and he has to fit in, in the span of four days before your first game. But I think the main thing was just the competitive piece.”

He is right in one context. If you had watched the game against Panama, you saw the first goal where they had constructed it from the flanks. With a short, intricate passage of play, Pulisic was free and Yunus Musah came into tap it home. Notably, Pulisic didn’t play in this game against Mexico, and, of course, the USMNT suffered. The power of positivity remains high, as Morris believes in Pochettino’s philosophy.

Aidan Morris believes Mauricio Pochettino and the USMNT are just getting started!

The player continued, “So I think you saw it a little bit of that against Panama the other day. I just think the energy was really good. And obviously, things aren’t always going to be perfect or off the bat. But, I think if you can just get the energy and the mentality right, man, I think we’ll be onto a good track.”

What’s your perspective on:

Can Pochettino replicate Ferguson's legacy with the USMNT if given enough time and support?

Have an interesting take?

For starters, they had around 53% possession on the ball, completing 388 passes with a 78% pass accuracy. The real difference comes in how you use the ball in certain aspects of play. The team needs greater impetus in the final third. With all that possession, they only had 1 shot on target. Clearly, the lack of players like Pulisic and Weston McKennie hurts the team because they are the heart and soul of the USMNT.

With these players back, the former PSG boss could get his team up and running. The CONCACAF Nations League matches come next, and he needs his team to turn on the afterburners. The USMNT would not get a better coach than Pochettino right now. He will lead the team from the front for the 2026 World Cup.

Until then, all pundits should probably find areas to help him rather than criticize the manager at every step!
