Santiago Gimenez has made the world take notice this season. With 18 goals in 16 league games, the Feyenoord star has been one of Eredivisie’s standout names. What’s even more surprising is that the Mexican international could have added a World Cup title to his trophy haul. Strangely, Gimenez rejected the opportunity to play with Lionel Messi & the Argentina team to follow his ‘dream‘. Why would a player even reject the chance to play for La Albiceleste?

Gimenez was born in Buenos Aires but moved to Mexico at the age of 3. He seems to be following in the footsteps of Christian Giménez, a former Boca Juniors player who also chose to play for Mexico over Argentina.

It seems the Feyenoord star does not regret turning down the opportunity to play for the World Champions. As per El Universal, he said (translated via DeepL), “I wasn’t going to make the decision for Messi, I was going to make it with my heart… I’m happy with the decision.” He did share his thoughts on the Argentina maestro. Gimenez said, “I’m not lying, I love Messi, he’s an animal, he’s the best in history, but it’s better to play against him.” Considering Gimenez’s form this season, Messi & Co definitely would have enjoyed playing alongside the Mexican.

Gimenez also added that his family did play their part in convincing him to not line up for the 3-time World Champions. Additionally, he explained, “My heart was not there and I am happy with the decision I made and what I can dream of with the Mexican National Team.” It looks like Gimenez is not losing sleep over the decision. Mexico hasn’t been in great form recently, but coach Jaime Lozano has big plans for the team with the star striker at the helm. In fact, Lozano has advised Gimenez on what he needs to do to level up his game and surrounding.
