Is the backlash against Ronaldo for a missed penalty justified, or are critics forgetting his legendary status?

All eyes are on Kylian Mbappe‘s coveted faceoff with his idol, Cristiano Ronaldo, yet, the soccer world has not moved on from the latter’s penalty miss. Ronaldo faced intense media backlash, despite scoring a penalty in his second attempt and helping Portugal beat Slovenia. Speaking to the press before Portugal’s quarter-final against France, Bernardo Silva hinted it is high time the soccer world moved past Ronaldo’s penalty miss. Silva doubled down that the Portuguese captain too is a human and is prone to mistakes.

During a pre-game conference, a reporter asked Bernardo Silva to comment on the backlash Cristiano Ronaldo got for missing the penalty. Silva said the backlash was imminent, considering all soccer fans would think they are a “manager” during competitions like the Euro and the World Cup. Thereafter, he deemed Ronaldo’s penalty miss normal. “Regarding Cristiano, we’re humans. He felt emotional when he missed the penalty. I think that it’s totally.. it’s acceptable, isn’t it? Because sometimes you react in ways you don’t expect and you wanted to help the team,” said Bernardo Silva, via talkSPORT.

Silva added, And he felt that he could have done better. In my opinion, it’s a very good penalty and a great save from Oblak.” Continuing his comments, Silva pointed out that it was completely normal for Cristiano Ronaldo to shed tears because that is how humans “deal with” emotions. Then, the Manchester City stalwart stressed that there is no reason for people to talk so much about Ronaldo becoming emotional.

Tonight, fans expect to see a different Cristiano Ronaldo, perhaps the vintage one, as he faces his heir apparent Kylian Mbappe in a do-or-die game. And yes, Ronaldo is more than ready for the battle.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s thoughts on facing France after narrow win against Slovenia

After Portugal beat Slovenia via penalties, Cristiano Ronaldo took to social media with a warning for Kylian Mbappe and Co. “We’re going to have a tough game now against France, which is one of the favorites to win. But we go to war, the team is fine and I will always do my best with this sweater,” said Ronaldo. After that, the man himself spoke about his penalty. “I missed the penalty but I wanted to be the first to score, because we have to take responsibility. I’ve never been afraid to face things as always,” Ronaldo added.
