Controversies often overshadow some incredible moments in the sport. One such recent example was the Spain Women’s National Team winning their maiden FIFA World Cup. The act of the Spanish Federation chief took center stage, receiving the wrath of the soccer fraternity. Outspoken Megan Rapinoe didn’t hold back in criticizing Luis Rubiales. And now the national team coach of Lionel Messi has joined the bandwagon.

The storm around the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) is yet to settle down. It keeps taking a new turn with every passing day. With the Spanish national team captain releasing a significant statement in support of Jenni Hermoso, Lionel Scaloni weighed in on the matter.

The Argentina national team is in Buenos Aires to kick off its 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification. They will play Ecuador at Estadio Mas Monumental on Friday. The team’s boss was talking to the press ahead of the game. He touched on several aspects, including the FIFA Women’s World Cup saga. Scaloni wasn’t impressed with the coverage that Rubiales is getting instead of Spain’s maiden World Cup trophy.

He said, It’s a pity for Spain women’s team that Rubiales case is talked about more instead of the enormous achievement the women’s team had, something historic. I congratulate you for the title you achieved in a fair way, it is a pity that this is not talked about enough.” 

The Albicelestes boss is right in some way. Spanish Federation boss Luis Rubiales is the talk of the town. The Spain women’s team didn’t get the deserved coverage and a chance to celebrate its achievement. With the Spanish Government and FIFA jumping the boat to punish Rubiales, it will be interesting to see the fate of Rubiales.

Moreover, many in the world of soccer have stood in solidarity with Jenni Hermoso and La Rojas. A few days back, USWNT legend Megan Rapinoe unleashed on the RFEF president.

In an interview with The Athletic, Rapinoe brutally slammed the RFEF boss. She said“It made me think about how much we are required to endure.” “Maybe that was something that galvanized them, but you shouldn’t have to have that,” she added.

“Signals such a deep level of misogyny and sexism in that federation and in that man (Luis Rubiales),” the OL Reign forward said of Rubiales grabbing his crotch picture going viral. With pressure building from all sides and FIFA suspending the RFEF boss, it will be interesting to see what’s next for Rubiales.
