MLS commissioner willing to do another creative deal to land Lionel Messi
It was back in 2007 when David Beckham joined the MLS. The then 31-year-old English legend was the most famous soccer player in 2007. Beckham’s contract included a unique clause where he would be able to buy an MLS expansion club for $25 million in the future. It proved to be a masterstroke, as the Beckham brand worked wonders for the popularity of MLS.
In a recent interview with The Athletic, Don Garber, MLS commissioner, suggested that he can go creative again to land Lionel Messi in MLS. Garber said, “You’re dealing with perhaps the most special player in the history of the game,” praising the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner.
“So when there are rumors of him connected to Miami, that’s great. And if it could happen, it would be terrific for MLS, it would be terrific for Messi and his family, and like everything with us, we try to run every opportunity down. I can’t give any more details than that because we don’t have them,” Garber added.
Garber knows it will take hefty compensation for Inter Miami to land the former Barcelona star. He suggested MLS will be flexible if Inter Miami decides to go for Messi in the summer, as it will be a tremendous opportunity for the league. It will be interesting to witness what transpires if Messi picks to join a Miami-based club.
