In April 2021, soccer fans were taken aback as concrete news circulated about the introduction of a new league – “European Soccer League”. As soon as the news became public there was immense backlash from soccer fans, critics, and pundits worldwide. The soccer community hasn’t felt so united in a long time. It was after media pressure and the fans taking to the streets and their clubs that top European clubs backed out of the initiative. The project is spearheaded by Florentino Perez, Real Madrid’s President. Though it could become a reality, it won’t be anytime soon. PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi, who never boarded on the idea of the Super League recently discussed more about it. He’s also fighting to keep Kylian Mbappe in Paris.

La Liga clubs Real Madrid and Barcelona are the only two teams who have not yet withdrawn from the Super League project. Florentino Perez still has his focus on the dream project and wishes to turn it into a reality in the future.

When asked about the ESL, the PSG president said, “I’m not against Barcelona or Real Madrid. I am against conflict and fighting. I met with Joan Laporta (Barcelona president) and told him the same thing. If they want to fight, they fight themselves. We won’t waste any more time on this as we have our own things to do. We want to develop, and the Super League is a joke today. It was dead before it was actually announced.”

Nasser further added, “I always tell them and advise them that they can return to ECA at any time. Join the family. They are welcome. Juventus has already withdrawn from the Super League project. They should do the same. They have no other choice.”

Being a president of a club is not easy. There’s not one fight but many. Nasser Al-Khelaifi’s biggest concern this season remains to keep a hold on Kylian Mbappe from leaving the club. To curb Real Madrid’s interest, PSG has put a price tag of $270 million on the French striker. Having Kylian Mbappe is Florentino Perez’s second dream and he will leave no stone unturned in achieving it.

Perez’s desire to acquire Kylian Mbappe is facing a formidable hurdle as PSG demands a staggering $270 million for the young talent. Mbappe’s reluctance to extend his contract with PSG has added to the tension. Real Madrid stands firm in refusing to meet PSG’s exorbitant asking price. This casts more uncertainty over Mbappe’s future.

The potential of a free transfer for Mbappe if he doesn’t renew with PSG has heightened the stakes. Florentino Perez’s ambitious dream move to bring Mbappe to Real Madrid gains urgency after Benzema’s unexpected summer transfer window departure. However, the $270 million price tag remains a significant roadblock as it raises questions about the feasibility of realizing Perez’s vision.
