“It Was a Sacrifice of Love” – Shakira Had to Put Her Career in 2nd Gear Due to Gerard Pique’s Soccer Career in Barcelona

Latin Music Queen Shakira and former FC Barcelona star Gerard Pique shocked the fans last year when they announced separation. It came after eleven years of togetherness. The reports state the reason behind the split to be Pique cheating on the Colombian singer. 

One of the most influential couples of the last decade has two children, Milan and Sasha. They lived together in Barcelona for the last eight years. Pique and Shakira have reached an agreement for the custody of their children. However, a few months back, Shakira made her feelings clear in an interview about how 2022 went and the way she sacrificed her career for children. 

Shakira prioritized children over her career

The 3X Grammy winner spoke to ELLE about how she decided to sacrifice her singing career. It was her priority to look after children while Pique was playing soccer at FC Barcelona in his prime. Shakira used to be in the US for her singing career, and they had to decide who takes a step back to look after their children.

Speaking on how she reached the decision, Shakira said, “And so, one of the two had to make that effort and that sacrifice. And I did it. I put my career in second gear, and I came to Spain to support him so he could play football and win titles. And it was a sacrifice of love. Thanks to that, my kids were able to have a present mom, and I have this amazing bond with them that is unbreakable, and that sustains us. You know, that is it. That’s all I can say.”

The year 2022 was a year of difficulties for the Colombian singer. It was not only the split with Pique but tax evasion accusations by Spanish authorities too that made the headlines. They accused the singer of not paying taxes between 2012 and 2014. Shakira has denied any wrongdoing, saying she moved to Spain in 2014.

Shakira is determined to come out of these critical situations to focus on her children, along with starting her singing career. After reaching an agreement with Pique over the custody of the children, reports say she will take the children to Miami with her.

Shakira came to the limelight in the soccer world after the ‘Waka Waka’ anthem of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Pique, who is ten years younger than the singer, started dating Shakira then. Fans regarded them as an influential and adorable couple until they split last year.

However, after the tough decision, a couple in search of a better future for their children has agreed on custody in the last months of 2022. Reports say Milan and Sasha will move to the US with Shakira, and Pique is allowed to meet them whenever he wants.
