Paris Saint Germain is now doing everything in their power to keep Kylian Mbappe in the French Capital. PSG has made him a staggering $108 million plus offer, which is three times more than Real Madrid’s. However, he is yet to respond to the lucrative advance and continues to mull about his potential exit. According to French journalist Jerome Rothen, PSG is solely responsible for this conundrum, by making Mbappe sign a two-year deal in 2022. Furthermore, Rothen has detailed how the Frenchman’s potential exit would manifest into ‘trauma’ for the PSG faithful.

In light of Mbappe’s uncertain future, PSG’s president Nasser Al Khelaifi said he still thinks the former will stay in Paris. However, the president could have avoided such a reassuring statement, had PSG been a bit more careful when they extended Mbappe’s contract in 2022.

In the summer of 2022, it was rumored that Kylian Mbappe would sign a three-year contract extension deal with PSG. However, it was a two-year deal with third-year eligibility, only if the player activated it. Interestingly, the Frenchman waived potential bonuses to make his PSG departure, a smooth one, let alone activating a third-year. “PSG is aware that the contract they made him sign two years ago now was a problem. Knowing that after two years, a player of his stature finds himself free from any contract. It was a big mistake to have extended him under these conditions,” said Jerome Rothen in a recent episode of Rothen s’enflamme podcast.

The journalist furthermore added that the Frenchman’s potential departure could hurt Luis Enrique’s side’s fanbase. “For PSG lovers, losing Mbappé would be a trauma,” Rothen added. According to him, a significant lot of PSG fans associate with the team because of Mbappe’s presence. Even when the side housed superstars such as Lionel Messi and Neymar, Mbappe was projected as the team’s face. And so, losing the squad’s centerpiece ultimately means an enormous drop in the team’s fanbase. Besides the fanbase drop, the French captain’s potential exit could also mar Ligue 1’s upcoming broadcasting deal.

Mbappe’s exit could hurt the entire Ligue 1

The LFP, which governs all soccer leagues in France, is reportedly looking to sign a deal valued at over $800 million per season to broadcast their leagues. However, no bids have been submitted yet. At the heart of this limbo is the uncertainty around Kylian Mbappe’s future. If the 2018 World Champion was to move to Madrid, the Ligue 1 viewership would plummet. Hence, bidders would hesitate to comply with the LFP’s staggering asking price.

Only Kylian Mbappe himself can put an end to this series of dramas and uncertainties. But all this could have been avoided or at least delayed if PSG had not let Mbappe sign a two-year deal with an option to become a free agent.
