34-year-old James McClean has been a tremendous “servant” for the Republic of Ireland. With over 100 International appearances, the ex-Stoke City midfielder has been a main cog for the Irish. Hence it is only natural that McClean’s signing from Wigan Athletic [League One] to Wrexham is being looked at as a downgrade.

Ex-Republic of Ireland international Keith Treacy in a conversation with former St Pat’s manager Johnny McDonnell shared the same concerns. Treacy believed that moving a league down will result in McClean hampering his International career. The Irish legend believes League 2 won’t help him prepare well for the challenges of International football. Hence he speculated that James has decided to not focus on his International career anymore.

“I don’t think Ireland is in his thinking anymore, but it is a real shame because he’s been a great servant and he’s played well,” said Treacy. He however still believed that McClean has a lot left in the tank. “I think he still has a still a great athlete but playing at that level, I think, uh, I think there’s going to be a lot of people higher up the pecking order now,” said the legend. While Treacy might be right in his assessment; McClean however had his own reasons for joining Wrexham.

Why did McClean choose Wrexham?

Just like the last batch of Wrexham signings; James McClean also joined the Red Dragons enamored by the ambitions of the Ryan Reynolds-owned side. As per McClean’ Wrexham’s ambitions matched the ambitions he has set for himself.
