To this, Lineker tweeted, “Is this acceptable @Twitter @elonmusk? And I don’t mean the grammar.” Although Musk has not replied, Lineker made his intentions clear regarding what he thought about the social media abuse.

It all started when Lineker started a tweet about the new UK Government immigration bill that spread like wildfire, resulting in a national debate. The former soccer player commented, “Good heavens, this is beyond awful,” to the UK Home Secretary on the new immigration policies. It prompted BBC to suspend him for his tweet and halted him from appearing on the show. However, many former players supported Lineker and wanted them to reinstate him. Former soccer players Ian Wright and Alan Shearer supported Lineker and agreed to not appear in the show, showing a sense of solidarity.

The BBC later brought him back, and Lineker’s son George posted a tweet concerning the abuse he faced from various sections of society. He tweeted, “Social media’s mad isn’t it. Over the last few days, on insta – never had so many nice messages. On Twitter – never had so much abuse. It’s not even anything to do with me.” Under the tweet, he posted a personal message he received on his private chat, threatening him and disrespecting him and his father.

The message sheds a poor light on the current issues of social media bullying and abuse. According to Twitter policies, they prohibit abusive behavior toward people who are targeted by specific individuals or groups. If found guilty, the organization down-ranks those tweets and also would suspend accounts if necessary.
