Manchester City were clearly on the backfoot against Arsenal just before the first half ended. Conceding two goals at home, Pep Guardiola and his side looked gutted with their title race being in danger. But what’s even more distressing for the current English champions is that one of its key players last year, Rodri, was taken off in the early stages of the first half. But is the Spanish Ballon d’Or nominee injured?
Making his way back into the Premier League, Rodri was supposed to be a key player for the City’s connecting play. However, he was seen falling suddenly while attacking a corner kick after City were 1 ahead. Subsequently, the midfielder was holding his knee and was taken off after struggling. While it looks to be a knee issue, the confirmation from City’s side is awaited. He was replaced by Mateo Kovacic in the 21st minute, leaving the fans concerned. Nevertheless, the Sky Blues came back from a goal down to draw against 10-man Gunners.
Rodri’s collapse happened all of a sudden and with minimal or no contact at all. This makes the matter even more concerning for the team, as they hope it’s not a serious issue. The star already missed the earlier part of the season after a hectic season of soccer, including the Euros, in which he was the Player of the Tournament. In addition, Rodri also caught a hamstring issue in the final of the continental tournament, leaving his fitness under concern.

Meanwhile, the player already complained about the current schedule being a concerning factor. Rodri averages 50 matches a year since he joined the Manchester Club; hence, the player has already expressed concerns about so many fixtures. It now appears that the schedule might have taken a toll on the City players. While only Manuel Akanji and Oscar Bobb are out, a potential Rodri’s absence could prove costly for City.
Why would Rodri be crucial for City’s title chances this season?
The Spaniard, with his regulation in the midfield and holding abilities, gives the City its ball possession stability. City conceded immediately after the 28-year-old left the field thanks to a superb strike from Ricardo Calafiori in the 21st minute. Moreover, his goals in church situations also helped Manchester City win the Champions League in 2023 and the Premier League last year. After his goal against Inter Milan in the final, he helped them steal 2 points from Chelsea last year, which played a role in Guardiola’s team winning the PL.
To sum up his value for the team, the former Villereal player also went on a 50-game streak for City until recently, in which the club never lost a game. While his number may not give a clear picture, the best in the business recognize his contribution. While he is one of the contenders to win the Ballon d’Or this year, will Rodri be fully fit this season? Let us know in the comments.
