In the 64th minute of the Le Classique, Luis Enrique pulled off a move that no one saw coming. He substituted Kylian Mbappe, a player with 38 goals this season, while his side were down to 10 men! Notably, this is not the first time Enrique decided to withdraw the prolific Frenchman in the middle of the game this season. As such, the PSG winger did not look overly joyful and this is not good news for PSG, who are fighting to extend the services of Mbappe, amidst serious interest from Real Madrid.
When Kylian Mbappe saw his name on the substitution board, the emotion was of surprise and disappointment. He walked down slowly in the rain and didn’t pay any heed to Luis Enrique who was standing on the touchline. The Frenchman was replaced by Goncalo Ramos while PSG were leading 1-0.

However, Enrique’s substitution proved right as Ramos scored in the 85th minute to seal the win for the Parisian side. While the substitution played a decisive role in the win, it could come at the cost of Kylian Mbappe. Recently, Luis Enrique made a surprising claim that Mbappe could continue in Paris. The PSG boss had said, “I still hope that Kylian changes his mind. He hasn’t said anything at the moment, he can change his opinion.” Per the Spaniard, winning all the titles this season could convince him.
Hence, Enrique’s current treatment of his prized asset is surprising. Mbappe even posted a cryptic-looking photo on Instagram, that hinted he was not happy at his substitution. This is undoubtedly good news for Real Madrid, who looks likely to be Kylian Mbappe’s next destination. But what is the rationale behind Enrique’s thinking? Let’s find out.
Is Enrique preparing for life after Kylian Mbappe?

This seems to be the most possible case, and one Enrique has sort of hinted at in the past. In February during a match against Rennes, Kylian Mbappe was substituted in the 65th minute. The script was uncannily similar to today as his replacement Goncalo Ramos netted a late equalizer. In the post-match presser, Enrique explained his decision. The Spaniard said, “We have to get used to not playing with Kylian; sooner or later it will happen. When I consider it appropriate, he will play or not play, like all coaches do with their players.”
Furthermore, the PSG boss also sent a message to the squad ahead of next season. He said, “I want maximum competitiveness for next season. I want every starting player on this PSG team to think that this is a great opportunity. This is what I am looking for this season and for next season.” With PSG rumoured to be interested in Rafael Leao, perhaps Enrique has his Kylian Mbappe replacement sorted already. That could explain his recent antics.
