Fans are smiling—Is it time for USMNT to part ways with Berhalter for good?

The soccer world still awaits official information on Gregg Berhalter’s USMNT future, as the US Soccer Federation is reviewing the team’s Copa America loss to decide on the head coach. However, an X handle named Andrew, citing an ‘insider source,’ claimed that the USSF is showing Berhalter the door. Per Andrew, the USSF is parting ways with the 50-year-old boss, eyeing ‘new leadership’ amid USMNT’s ‘regression in the Copa tournament.

“Gregg Berhalter is set to be relieved from his duties as USMNT head coach in the next 48 hours. US Soccer has made the determination that the team needs new leadership due to the regression of their performances. The team and staff have already been informed,” wrote Andrew on X, citing ‘insider sources.’

It is unsure whether Andrew’s claims are reliable or not. Anyhow, they can’t totally be overlooked, as his X handle says he is close to the USMNT, German club Schalke 04, and the MLS’ San Jose Earthquakes. This latest update on the 50-year-old comes just a week after the USMNT lost back-to-back group games against Panama and Uruguay and prematurely crashed out of the Copa America. With Berhalter reportedly out of the US coaching job, let’s delve deeper into the most-favored candidates who could replace him in the American camp.

Who are the candidates to replace Gregg Berhalter in the USMNT?

Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp’s name is recurrently echoed in soccer circles as a potential replacement for Gregg Berhalter. Quite a few US veterans have shown keen interest in the American team’s potential hiring of the German talisman. Former US coach and Klopp’s compatriot Jurgen Klinsmann was the latest to pip the ex-Reds boss for the US job. However, as things stand now, the ace tactician is reportedly mulling to take charge of the German national team after they prematurely crashed out of the UEFA Euros.

Besides Klopp, big names such as Joachim Low, Thierry Henry, Steve Cherundulo, and Patrick Viera are fan favorites to take charge of the American team. Whoever that is going to be has a Herculean task of leading the Americans in a US-hosted FIFA World Cup in 2026. A premature World Cup exit won’t be the same as a premature Copa exit.
