Is Ronaldo's limited playtime a smart move, or should he be on the field the entire match?

It’s just a matter of time before the club action resumes. Till then, we have one more run of international fixtures down the road. Concerning the UEFA Nations League, Portugal will be playing its fourth group-stage clash against Scotland today. With just hours remaining until kick-off, the question looms whether Cristiano Ronaldo is playing tonight or not.

The Portuguese skipper played a crucial role in the previous matchday against Poland, helping his side secure an easy 1-3 victory over Poland. He got his name on the scoresheet in the first half soon after Bernardo Silva broke the deadlock, with Piotr Zieliński denying a clean sheet for Os Navegadores before Rafael Leao’s effort ended up as an own goal. However, CR7 was substituted just after the hour mark by Diego Jota.

Removing the 39-year-old from the pitch with 30 minutes still on the clock was a wise decision from Roberto Martinez. This way, he was able to get enough rest and tackle fatigue for the upcoming clash. Hence, with no injury concerns whatsoever, there’s no reason as to why the skipper shouldn’t play. Ardent fans are in for a treat as Cristiano Ronaldo will play tonight against Scotland at Hampden Park.

However, it’s unlikely he would be playing the full game. On top of that, it’s also unclear whether his involvement in the game will be from the start of the game or in the latter stages of the game. Interestingly, head coach Roberto Martinez had some comments to make regarding his presence in the game.

“I have no doubt that Cristiano after 60 minutes (on Saturday) can be involved in the second game. I don’t know if he can start or if he can finish the game, but he can certainly be involved,” said the former Belgium NT boss ahead of facing Steve Clarke’s Scotland.

While this mystery will be cleared as soon as the lineups are announced, one thing is certain the Real Madrid icon will be looking to keep up his goalscoring antics, better than ever actually!

Have an interesting take?

Notably, after a disappointing and rather goalless 2024 UEFA Euro campaign, the Al Nassr skipper seems to have found his mojo back, getting his name on the scoresheet in every other game he plays. Since the start of the 2024/25 campaign, the 5x Ballon d’Or winner has notched scored 7 goals in 9 matches so far across all competitions for the Saudi Pro League giants. Similar are his efforts for the national camp as well.

Even during the September window, Ronaldo scored in either of the matches against Croatia and Scotland that Portugal had won 2-1. His efforts since then have successfully kept Portugal at the top of League A Group 1 standings with 9 points. Trailing behind them is Croatia with three tally less, followed by Poland with just 3 points, and Scotland yet to secure their first-ever point in the Nations League campaign.
