The first game of the Mauricio Pochettino era saw the USMNT getting one of their rivals, Panama, in a tight encounter. Although there is still much to be desired in terms of performance, the Pochettino era is well and truly underway. Moreover, we saw improvements in the team’s passing. With around 55% possession, they controlled the game well. Yet, Panama had their chances to score but couldn’t capitalize on their chances. Christian Pulisic, notably, played a crucial role in the victory.
Yet, he won’t take part in the game against Mexico as he left the squad to join AC Milan in Italy. It becomes a significant blow to a side that relies on his creative skill set to get goals. Therefore, Mauricio Pochettino left him out due to load management, according to Golazo America.
Apart from the left winger, Weston McKennie, Ricardo Pepi, Marlon Fossey, and Zack Steffen (minor injuries) exit the USMNT camp, ahead of the Mexico clash. With the two teams facing off in Mexico, this is a major loss to miss top talents; especially when you are about to play Mexico. The USMNT and Mexico have an intense rivalry that often causes controversies. It’s a spicy clash, as Pulisic’s absence could hurt the USMNT.

Yet, load management is common because of the growing number of games and injuries. There are players out with long-term injuries after international duty. This frequently creates tension between club and national team coaches as they lose players through no fault of their own. With the fixture list coming in thick and fast, Christian Pulisic and other players need some rest.

Load management is common in most sports. The NBA teams use this to prevent their players from picking up injuries. Likewise, with the UEFA Champions League extended to 32 teams, the teams playing in European competitions play an extra two games from the already existing six matches they played before. Naturally, burnouts happen for players and injuries creep in. With no rest, it becomes imperative for players to recover well before their club matches.

One prime example of a player getting injured is Martin Odegaard of Arsenal, who suffered an injury against Norway. He is at least out until December, which became a cause of concern for the Gunners. With AC Milan needing Pulisic in most matches, they can’t afford to lose him. For USMNT and Pochettino, it comes as a punch to their gut.
With the team finally finding a world-class coach to lead them from the front, losing players like Pulisic will weaken the team. Yes, other players can come in and perform. But Pulisic’s impact on the USMNT remains at an all-time high level. The American made a name for himself at multiple top clubs in Europe and continues to do so.
Let’s see if other players can step up their game and bring Pochettino some Mexican Quesadillas for dinner! If not, the critics will jump onto the bandwagon.
