Iran Calls for the USA Soccer Team to Be ‘Kicked Out’ From the FIFA World Cup 2022 After Sharing a ‘Distorted Image’ Of Their National Flag

This World Cup has been full of action and drama. Drama from the get-go when Qatar won the hosting right for the FIFA World Cup 2022. Activists raised their voices against Qatar’s management due to human rights violations. FIFA WC is again in news for a heated discussion, this time with nothing to do with Qatar. A brand new controversy came in between Iran and USA, ahead of the group-defining clash. Iran is calling for USMNT to be kicked out of the tournament.

The USA team’s official social media accounts recently posted the group standings and how they have a chance to go to the next round. However, these posts across all the accounts and their official websites sparked a controversy. Things got heated so much that USMNT management had a press conference to address the issue, which had to be cut short due to a heated exchange with an Iranian reporter.

USMNT breached FIFA rules in their post

In their post, USMNT management posted their group standings in which they altered the national flag of Iran. they removed an emblem from the middle of the flag. In the press conference, they stated, “The intent of the post was to show support for women’s rights. It was meant to be a moment. We made the post at the time. All the other representations of the flag remain consistent and will continue to.”

They didn’t think about the aftermath the posts will do because Iran is now calling out FIFA to kick the USA from the tournament.

Iran state media took to Twitter saying, “According to section 13 of #FIFA rules, any person who offends the dignity or integrity of a country, a person or group of people … shall be sanctioned with a suspension lasting at least ten matches or a specific period, or any other appropriate disciplinary measure.”

USMNT will face Iran in a crucial match. Iran has accused USMNT of posting outrageous alterations to the flag to distract Iranian players. They will play the match on Wednesday and fans are hoping for their team to go to the next round. The team that will win USA vs Iran will strengthen their hope for the round of 16.
