Another Barcelona legend to MLS—Is Inter Miami becoming the new Barca of the USA?

These are bittersweet times for Inter Miami. The club has experienced some amazing success in the last year with a Leagues Cup triumph and is currently on a high after taking the #1 spot in the MLS. But the depth of their squad has been an area of concern, especially this season. On one side, they had to let go of a few players to arrange finances for new signings but in addition, they also have been hampered by a few injuries, even to their captain Lionel Messi. However, the club could see a few more alterations in the coming weeks with an important update arriving about Diego Gomez.

According to the latest reports, Gomez is close to landing a deal in Europe. “My agent is in contact with the club here and with Brighton. I came here wanting to make the leap to Europe and hopefully that happens. It will be whatever God wants,” Gomez was quoted as saying by ESPN.

It remains unclear though, whether the deal is set to happen in this transfer window or early next year. A few talks suggest that the deal could be worth $18 million and Gomez could stay with Miami until the end of the current season, then shift to England in January. But fans are expected to get a clear picture after the 2024 Olympics.

The South American player made a huge impact for Inter Miami despite suffering an ankle injury this season. Playing 550 minutes in the league, Gomez scored three goals and provided the same number of assists to help Miami ace some crucial wins. However, Messi’s club might have found a suitable and familiar replacement for the 21-year-old.

Inter Miami’s potential to reunite Lionel Messi with former Barcelona teammate

To boost their central midfield, Inter Miami can acquire the Barcelona star Sergio Roberto. The former Barcelona captain’s contract expired at the end of the 2023-24 season and the Catalan club may not be able to extend it due to their financial situation. This gives David Beckham’s club a good opportunity to bring another former teammate together with Lionel Messi.

Miami’s task is not going to be straightforward though. It is claimed that Roberto may have chosen the Premier League as his next destination. The 32-year-old has been linked to Manchester United and Arsenal, but there is no clarity about where he could land. Overall, with Messi suffering repeated injuries, it’s youngsters like Diego Gomez who are carrying Inter Miami’s burden this season. And the fans will hope to see Gomez stay till the end of the season.
