Inter Miami means all business this season. There’s no room for mistakes, as the Herons have set their sights on becoming the best. For the on-pitch preparations, David Beckham and Co. are wasting no time to bolster their ranks, especially knowing there is a defensive crisis in the right-back position. They seem to have found the answer to the problem, as the club has reportedly started negotiating to secure the services of a 24-year-old Argentine defender.

There has been a void in the right-back spot ever since DeAndre Yedlin moved to FC Cincinnati. He was sold for $172,799 GAM, with no replacement in the team. Journalist Cesar Luis Merlo has exclusively reported that Tata Martino and Co. are negotiating the purchase of Boca Juniors’ Marcelo Weigandt. The 24-year-old defender’s contract expires in December 2024. Hence, the MLS side is keen to bring the Argentina-born defender at a cheaper price. Merlo asserts that Miami has already sent a formal offer, with Boca Juniors yet to respond.

Notably, Weigandt came through the ranks of Boca Juniors and was sent on loan to Gimnasia in 2020. Since his return, he has made just 72 appearances. In fact, Weigandt has yet to feature for Boca this season. Certainly, less game time might compel the right-back to consider a move to Inter Miami and join fellow Argentinian Lionel Messi. Today, Miami will be debuting in the CONCACAF Champions Cup RO16 against Nashville without a specific RB. Hence, time is of the essence, as they should act quickly to sign Weigandt, given that they are also busy with other negotiations.

Inter Miami is keen to add more than just a defender

According to journalist Gaston Edul, Inter Miami is on the verge of securing the signature of Matias Rojas. The 28-year-old midfielder has reportedly attracted the attention of Tata Martino, who is keen on enhancing the team’s flank. Rojas has featured in 10 matches for Corinthians in the Brazilian Serie A, this season. Notably, after DeAndre Yedlin, midfielder Jean Mota also fell victim to MLS roster compliance.

This forced the Florida-based club to offload the Brazilian to Esporte Clube Vitória in the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A. As a result, Inter Miami finds itself in a favorable position to acquire replacements for these departures while remaining compliant with MLS regulations. For now, Inter Miami would see the RB signing as the main agenda. It remains to be seen if they complete either acquisition in time.
