David Beckham's influence on Wrexham's kit—Genius move or just hype?

When it comes to soccer kits, the sky’s the limit for creativity. Each year, clubs around the world collaborate with their respective kit makers to design some of the most stunning kits for their players and dedicated fans. Like other teams, Wrexham didn’t disappoint this season, with all three of their kits standing out in their own way. While one may be wondering about their source of inspiration, you’ll be surprised to learn that former England player David Beckham played a role in it.

This revelation was made by Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney himself on the latest episode of Men in Blazers. While praising all three kits, especially the third golden shirt, host Roger Bennett asked how involved he was in the process of choosing the kit’s design. Interestingly, Rob replied, “Ryan [Reynolds] and I are very involved in that,” insisting that this shouldn’t come as a surprise, considering they can’t get their fingers (nor they should, Rob says) in other logistic or team-related decisions.

The Hollywood actors sit alongside the club’s directors Shaun Harvey and Humphrey Ker to discuss everything there is for the kit, going through several designs. For this season, both Reynolds and McElhenney had something special in their minds: “One thing that Ryan and I insisted upon—and this was after having seen the Beckham documentary we both watched the weekend it came out—we wanted to get a long-sleeved version of every shirt,” said McElhenney.

“We wanted it to be a little bit loose and billowy in that look from the ’90s that Beckham and all the players and clubs seem to wear those throughout that decade. We wanted to have something like that,” concluded McElhenney, leaving on a crucial note that all three kits in the long sleeves are going to be available very soon.

We can understand that watching David Beckham play in his iconic full-sleeve shirt must have led both Reynolds and McElhenney to envision Paul Mullin and Co. sporting a similar design. Wasting no time, they gave an order to their kit maker Macron for the same. Either way, it’s a neat idea from the owners. However, the influence of Beckham’s documentary isn’t the only thing that makes this kit special—there’s more to the story!

Wrexham AFC’s 2024/25 kits pay special tribute to a heartbreaking cause

This season, all of Wrexham AFC’s kits pay a heartfelt tribute to the tragic Gresford Colliery Miners incident, honoring the 266 victims who lost their lives in the 1934 explosion and fire at the Gresford Colliery near Wrexham. The club has fittingly commemorated them by featuring a white image of the mine’s wheel on the kits, serving as a poignant memorial to those men.

As for the design, kit maker Macron has once again excelled for the Welsh club. A closer look at the jersey reveals intricate details, including the club’s official symbol, dragons, subtly printed across the fabric. With this tribute, Wrexham has proven once again that the club is about more than just on-field success.

Backed by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, the team continues to show why they are fan favorites both on and off the pitch. No wonder they went the extra mile to take inspiration from David Beckham, which Wrexham fans would surely be grateful for.
