Is the USMNT head coach delay linked to Emma Hayes? What are your thoughts on this connection?

USMNT is still drawing a blank on a new coach. It has been more than a month since Gregg Berhalter was relieved from his duties and his replacement is still a mystery. While each day is hoped to clear this riddle, an insider has made a shocking revelation that the US Soccer Federation won’t announce Berhalter’s replacement until Emma Hayes’ USWNT is ‘involved in the Olympics.’

The assertion was made by soccer journalist and writer Doug McIntyre in the latest episode of Alexi Lalas-hosted State of the Union podcast with a panel also including ex-USMNT player Stu Holden. While addressing the gossip surrounding the potential managers, McIntyre revealed that the announcement won’t be made anytime soon. “I don’t think we’re going to get any announcement over the next week here as long as the US Women’s National Team is involved in the Olympics,” said McIntyre.

“I don’t think US soccer would want to upstage them but it doesn’t feel like we’re close to getting a new coach for the Men’s National Team this week at least and maybe even before the friendly against Canada in September,” added the commentator.

There you go then. Forget about this month; we won’t have an update on the next USMNT manager until September 8, when they play the Canucks. Additionally, there may not be any news until the New Zealand clash as well, which the Star and Stripes will play on September 11. Regardless, it’s still baffling as to why USMNT’s new manager announcement has something to do with Hayes and her American ladies.

Perhaps, the USSF isn’t keen to make any decision in haste. Already, the amount of scrutiny they have faced might have forced them to take calculated risks. Speaking of which, is there any progress then?

Jurgen Klopp was the most mentioned name as soon as Gregg Berhalter was sacked. However, the German tactician immediately went out of the picture as he wished to continue his managerial sabbatical. In the meantime, many other names came on the table, including LAFC boss Steve Cherundolo, former England manager Gareth Southgate, and France U23 boss Thierry Henry.

However, looks like the USMNT has doubled down to two key names; Hoffenheim manager Pellegrino Matarazzo and Herve Renard, currently occupied with French WNT. Both are heavily linked to take up the empty manager’s chair. While Matarazzo lacks international experience, Renard boasts plenty of it, having worked with many national federations. The French tactician clinched the famous win over Lionel Messi’s Argentina in the 2022 World Cup with Saudi Arabia.

He has even won multiple African Cup of Nations tournaments with different countries, making him an appealing choice. However, there’s been an argument over USMNT focusing on just big-name managers. While there’s no doubt about the quality that Renard will bring, less-heard names like Matarazzo may also work out for the Eagles.

Regardless, time is of the essence for USSF as they shall speed up the process to both sign and announce the new US Men’s National Team manager.
