Backing Berhalter for the World Cup—Smart move or a recipe for disaster?

The US Soccer Federation has a decision to make regarding Gregg Berhalter. Ever since the Stars and Stripes’ recent upset in the Copa America 2024, the 50-year-old’s future with the Star and Stripes has been surrounded by dark clouds. While fans thought that a decision to relieve Gregg from his duties must have been made by now, FOX Sports USMNT insider Doug McIntyre made a shocking revelation that “No decision has been made yet.”

Earlier, FOX Sports had reported that USMNT would give a final decision regarding Berhalter next week. However, the gravy looks to be something else, “There are people within U.S. Soccer that still want to bring Berhalter back so we will have to see how it shakes out,” said McIntyre, as compiled by @ussoccerplus

Notably, the analyst asserted that everyone in the US Soccer Federation knows that Berhalter remains a ‘radioactive’ personality in the whole nation. It would be impossible for the former player to get fans, sponsors, or even media on the same page. “The idea of Berhalter being gone is not true,” added McIntyre.

Even though a few within the US Federation are ready to keep Berhalter, it surely won’t settle well with ardent fans. Therefore, as backup, the Men’s National Team has reportedly shortlisted some names. Interestingly, McIntyre revealed that current LAFC coach Steve Cherundolo is the name that comes into the minds of the US Soccer Federation for replacing Berhalter.

The analyst asserted that the MLS team coach “doesn’t have a ton of head coach experience.” However, his recent achievements with LAFC, like guiding them to the 21/22 MLS Cup and Supporter’s Shield surely check a lot of the boxes. That’s not all as there is another big name that may put an end to USMNT’s misery.

Speaking more about Cherundolo, he has been a part of three World Cup teams. Aside from coaching the Germany U15 and Bundesliga youth side of Hannover 96, the 45-year-old has also worked as an assistant coach for VfB Stuttgart. Moreover, Cherundolo also worked part-time for the USMNT as an assistant under Dave Sarachan. However, McIntyre urged the federation to go big and get the most desired name by the fans: “Jurgen Klopp is the dream candidate, it’s a guy everybody wants. I’ve been told U.S. Soccer has to see if he’s available.”

The Fox Sports commentator underlined that the U.S. Soccer sporting director, Matt Crocker has worked with the former Liverpool boss back in England and urged him to check if the German tactician is interested in the job. Moreover, McIntyre highlighted that new USWNT boss Emma Hayes also has a good relationship with Klopp. The two know each other from their time in England with Hayes even seeking him out for advice recently. This similarity makes the former Borussia Dortmund boss a key possibility.

Regardless, in order to bring names like Jurgen Klopp and Steve Cherundolo, USMNT shall make their stance clear on Gregg Berhalter.
