Cristiano Ronaldo was the frontman of Real Madrid’s dominance in the last decade. Even though the Portuguese received plaudits for his stint with Los Blancos, the team had many stars accompanying him. Karim Benzema also began his career at Real Madrid along with Ronaldo, adding to the long list of Galacticos. But as per a soccer expert, Benzema needs to be appreciated for his generosity over the years at the club.
Real Madrid won the most UEFA Champions League trophies in European soccer history, having 14 title triumphs. Even in their El Clasico matches against Barcelona, they slightly have an edge with the victories attained. But it was not a single man’s effort for Florentino Perez’s men. The Real Madrid team in the last ten years has been the best club in Europe. However, Barcelona have always been a thorn in their flesh since the beginning. But in the past 10-15 years, El Clasico was even better with the iconic rivalry between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. However, former USA player Janusz Michallik showered praise on Karim Benzema for playing under Ronaldo’s shadow.
Michallik on ESPN FC said, “I’ve always felt, man oh man, he’s(Benzema) in service of Cristiano Ronaldo. He is so unselfish, or he was so unselfish in so many, so many games where later he proved that he could have done it all by himself which he by the way did.”
Michallik said that Benzema chose to support the Al Nassr star over the years, even though he could pull out incredible performances. The former defender referred to players, apart from Messi and Ronaldo, who did not steal the show. Benzema scored 11 goals in El Clasico matches, one of the fiercest rivalries in soccer. Yet, fans labeled him as selfish!
Benzema went on to win a Champions League, two La Liga titles, and a Ballon d’Or after Ronaldo left Madrid. The striker played a prominent role in Real Madrid’s 2021-22 UCL win. Even Messi, who is the top scorer in El Classicos, appreciated Benzema for winning the last Ballon d’Or.
