In the current tennis picture, there is one player who captured the hearts and minds of the sporting fraternity. Ons Jabeur is the highest-ranked African and Arab tennis player in history and made two Grandslam finals. Yet to win her first Grandslam, she advanced to the second round of the 2023 Wimbledon tournament, hoping to win her first Grandslam. She has the world at her feet. And another superstar who steals the limelight wherever he goes is Cristiano Ronaldo. He signed for Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League. Nonetheless, he became instrumental in bringing world-class players to Saudi Arabia. 

Therefore, Jabeur wants to follow the same path as CR7 and bring Saudi Arabia’s investment into tennis. In her on-court interview, she explained how she loved playing on grass and felt like the legendary Portuguese player when arriving to play soccer. Along with it, the current investment of soccer players in Saudi Arabia excites her. 

Wants Saudi-like investment in tennis!

She explained how the situation would differ from golf. Liv Golf has taken over the world but has had its fair share of controversies after the investment from the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia. She hopes they invest in WTA too along with ATP. According to Metro, Jabeur continued, “If it benefits for the player, I’m 100% there. Again, I said, and I hope in Saudi they will not just invest with ATP, I hope with WTA.” 

Jabeur continued, “I believe in Saudi they’re doing great giving women more rights. It’s time to change things. Believe it or not, we have the best two women in [the] Arabic world right now playing in tennis. It’s now or never. I hope they really invest in WTA.”

Ons is one of the leading players on the circuit, considering she made the finals of the 2022 Wimbledon and US Open. And apart from that, the sudden investment of players in Saudi Arabia is taking the world by storm. With loads of soccer players who are old, in their prime, and young leaving for the Middle East, Ons would welcome investment in tennis. The tennis star drew inspiration from the soccer in emulating success on the court.

She also explained her love for grass in the interview as Jabeur stated, “I played a lot of football on grass, I love football so much. It’s amazing to come back here, the grass is so beautiful. I love connecting with the nature and seeing all the flowers everywhere. Maybe I pretend to be Cristiano Ronaldo playing here!’” We all know soccer players play on the grass as Ronaldo and others play every day. 

Therefore, she reflected on how she is the Ronaldo of tennis. She gave her support for potential WTA and ATP investment from the Saudi group, which will help boost the sport. Is the sport of tennis next on the list for Saudi Arabia?
