Did Anthony Taylor's penalty decision rob Germany of their rightful place in Euro 2024?

It’s the end of a momentous era. Toni Kroos has played his last international game. What hurt more was that his last spell in professional soccer was when Germany lost to Spain in the quarterfinal of the Euro 2024. And fans cannot feel more disappointed regarding the legend’s departure, which could have continued for two more games had Die Mannschaft overcome Spain.

It could have been possible if referee Anthony Taylor had awarded them a penalty when Musiala’s shot struck Marc Cucurella’s hand inside the box. However, having denied the debated penalty, more than fans, his former teammate lamented Kroos’ unfortunate exit.

Two-time European Champion Iker Casillas chose to comfort Kroos. Posting on his Instagram, Casillas wrote, “I’m sorry Toni. Thanks again!🇪🇸 Vs 🇩🇪.” Both Kroos and Casillas played together at Real Madrid for a season and the former Spain captain decided to show some sporting spirit for the German icon.

One of the most decorated German players of the modern era, Toni Kroos had his best chance of winning the Euro as the hosts. Germany hasn’t won a single Euro since 1996 and the 2-1 loss to Spain will mean that Kroos will be without one. Coming to the penalty, Cucurella’s hand was moving toward his body and was pointing downwards in a vertical position. Hence it was deemed as unintentional by the referee and a few experts.
