When Gareth Southgate announced the provincial 33-man squad for the Euros, some surprising omissions were expected. After all, only 26 could fly out to Germany. The removal of big names like Harry Maguire, Curtis Jones, and James Maddison didn’t generate much buzz considering their season. But, Jack Grealish’s omission, who played 36 games for the English Champions, caught everyone off guard. There were reports that some England stars approached the manager over his decision. Now, a former English player doesn’t agree with Southgate opting to leave out the ‘game changer‘ in his squad.

Speaking on the talkSPORT channel, Darren Bent has a different stance on Grealish compared to Southgate. The former striker said, “I would have had him in the squad, Jack, because he’s not a player who needs many minutes either.” As per Bent, Jack Grealish should be in the team unless he is not fit since he is a game-changer. Bent explained that Grealish’s qualities, namely his ability to take the pressure off by winning freekicks and ball-carrying, make him invaluable. Hence, regarding the puzzling decision, he said, “I’m shocked from Gareth’s perspective.

As per Bent, Jack Grealish’s teammate Phil Foden is now the best bet to play in the left flank. Alternatively, Southgate also has Anthony Gordon who impressed for New Castle in that position. Foden getting the nod over Grealish is not surprising, considering how he was the main man for Manchester City. Yet, it is worth noting that Foden mostly played in attacking midfield or in the right wing for Guardiola’s side. Hence, why was Grealish snubbed for someone who doesn’t even play in his position? Pep Guardiola might have something to say on the matter.

Pep Guardiola had dropped Jack Grealish earlier citing his ‘disappointing displays’

Jack Grealish’s form toward the end of the Premier League wasn’t great. Recently, the winger wasn’t even included in Manchester City’s travelling squad to Fulham. As per reports, the reason was his ‘disappointing displays‘ in the crunch part of the season. Moreover, Guardiola even had talks with the Englishman regarding his form ahead of the FA Cup final. Guardiola apparently warned his winger to step up next season. Otherwise, Doku might make the left wing his own.

With just 3 goals and 3 assists in 36 games, Jack Grealish has not had the best of season. Hence, Southgate’s refusal to include the winger in the Euro Squad is understandable. For Grealish, this is an opportunity to reflect. His performances haven’t met expectations and next season is decisive for him. If he fails to pick up the pace, it could be curtains for his Manchester City and possibly England career.
