“Stand Taller Than Tiny People” were the words of USWNT icon Megan Rapinoe advocating for Barbara Banda. Recently honored as the 2024 BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year after an extraordinary NWSL season with Orlando Pride, the 24-year-old had much to celebrate. However, controversy arose when JK Rowling made some inflammatory anti-transgender remarks. Fortunately, support quickly came, first from Megan Rapinoe and now from Emma Hayes herself.

To begin with Rowling’s comments, the renowned author made serious allegations calling the Zambian striker a “man” competing in women’s sports. This statement stemmed from an incident from 2022 when Barbra Banda faced exclusion from the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations due to alleged high testosterone levels.

As for Emma Hayes, these comments are just ‘ridiculous.’ As shared by Women’s soccer writer, Tom Garry, the ex-Chelsea boss empathized with Banda and remarked, “It’s ridiculous she has to endure questions like this.” She then went on to praise, the Orlando Pride star’s stellar performance with Orlando Pride.

“She’s been tremendous,” stated Emma Hayes. “What a brilliant season she’s had.” The 48-year-old firmly believes that this is what people including JK Rowling should be talking about rather than transphobic sentiments. Expressing her discontent regarding negative commentary, Hayes added, “I’m disappointed when I hear a lot of these things being said.” 

JK Rowling’s statements have undoubtedly stirred significant controversy. Although Barbara Banda hasn’t commented publicly on this issue yet, it is clear that the soccer community stands firmly behind her. In this instance, she issued a powerful message of support for Barbra Banda by stating, “We’re with her.” Recently, on her Instagram story, she shared an encouraging note: “It’s incredibly important to not only use my platform to get a message like this and partner with Incyte but also to help people empower them to make a difference in their own communities.”

Expressing pride in Banda’s accomplishments, the USWNT legend concluded with the heartfelt message, “We love you Babs.” The affection is evident—Megan Rapinoe adores her, Emma Hayes supports her, and the entire Orlando Pride loves her. With such unwavering backing from all these supporters, Barbra Banda certainly has no reason for concern.
