It was a rare occasion in 2019 when Cristiano Ronaldo finished third in the Ballon d’Or rankings. Lionel Messi won his sixth that year, and Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk finished second ahead of Ronaldo. However, what caused attention was van Dijk’s response to Ronaldo not attending the ceremony, Piers Morgan jumping on the bandwagon, and the Liverpool defender’s befitting reply.

Ronaldo last won the award in 2017 and finished second and third in the next two years. Ronaldo was absent from the 2019 ceremony that saw his arch-rival Messi winning the coveted honor. His absence raised some eyebrows, and Virgil van Dijk was asked about it. The Liverpool defender fired a six-word response jokingly.
Liverpool defender once humbled Piers Morgan over Cristiano Ronaldo
The gala ceremony took place in Paris in December 2019. After a sensational season with FC Barcelona, Lionel Messi won the award ahead of Virgil van Dijk and Ronaldo. Ronaldo snubbed the event after reports of Messi winning the award. One of the reporters asked the Liverpool superstar, “Cristiano Ronaldo won’t be here tonight, so that’s already one less rival to care about.”
“Was Cristiano Ronaldo really a rival?” van Dijk joked. When it was posted on Twitter, it didn’t go down well with Piers Morgan. The British Broadcaster looked disappointed with the comments of the Netherlands defender. Morgan tweeted, “No.. Cristiano Ronaldo is a far greater player. You’re not in his league.”
Hi Piers, If you don’t jump on the social media bandwagon and would listen to the whole interview then you would know I made a joke, and only got respect for those 2 😀
— Virgil van Dijk (@VirgilvDijk) December 2, 2019
It didn’t end here. Liverpool defender put Morgan in his place with a befitting reply. Virgil van Dijk tweeted, “Hi Piers! If you don’t jump on the social media bandwagon and would listen to the whole interview, then you would know I made a joke and only got respect for those 2,” in response.
Piers Morgan has always defended Cristiano Ronaldo. It is evident, especially after the explosive interview with Ronaldo last year. But those discussions from 2019 shows Morgan is a massive Ronaldo fan.

Al Nassr played Al Khaleej on Sunday. Khaleej held Al Nassr to a disappointing 1-1 draw. The draw saw Al Ittihad taking a five points lead at the top with four games remaining. The result was a major setback for Al Nassr, who hasn’t won the league since the 2018-19 season.
Ronaldo went goalless in the game. It has been an inconsistent few months for the Portuguese. He hasn’t yet got into his goal-scoring form and the club will hope for their star forward to play a significant role in the next season.
