One incident, in particular, gained him a lot of notoriety. In 1992, when Bielsa was the coach of Newell’s Old Boys, the team lost 6-0 to San Lorenzo. Questions were asked of the coach for his performance and many extremist soccer fans, known as the Barra brava, reached the house of Bielsa to have a word with him.
Marcelo Bielsa threatened fans with a grenade
When angry fans came to his house, instead of being intimidated by the crowds’ numbers, Bielsa came out in his pajamas with a grenade in his hand. Bielsa told almost 20 angry fans, “If you don’t go now, I will pull the pin.”

Seeing the grenade, the fans ran away. Not only that, Bielsa chased the fans down the streets with the Grenade in his hand while yelling, “Do you still want to talk?” The sight of the grenade was enough to send the fans running, and no one was hurt in the incident.
Bielsa is a passionate soccer coach
While this story may be shocking, Bielsa is known for his eccentricities. He is a man who is very passionate about soccer and has been quoted as saying, “I want people to take the game by the scruff of the neck, not be scared to get on the ball and play and spend time in possession of the ball and not spending time trying to win it back”. This passion is evident in his coaching style which is often described as being intense and demanding.

His coaching has led to success for many teams, including the national team of Argentina which he led to an Olympic Gold Medal in 2004. While this story may be amusing, it also highlights the pressure that soccer coaches can be under.
They are often the first ones who have to answer to the fans after a disappointing result. In Bielsa’s case, he dealt with the pressure in his own unique way.
