Real Madrid‘s interest in Kylian Mbappe is no secret. The French winger who finished 3rd in the Ballon d’Or would improve any side in the world. Madrid came close to signing him in 2022 but the move did not happen. Fortunately, Los Blancos did not have any issues scoring goals thanks to the efforts of Vinicius Junior and Karim Benzema. Recently, the folks at the TV Show ‘El-Chiringuito’ made their opinion clear regarding the importance of Vinicius Jr.

The Brazilian Winger, while being a nightmare for defenders, is not a supreme goalscorer. His highest goal tally in a season never exceeded 25. This season, he has already been outscored by Jude Bellingham who is a midfielder. Hence there are doubts concerning whether Vinicius can be Madrid’s star attacker. However, Real Madrid recently renewed his contract and Vinicius will be a key part of the long-term project at the club.

El Chiringuito de Jugones is a soccer show that focuses on La Liga. Recently, Javi Balboa made heads turn with his statement. He said, “I would not sell Vinicius but I would change position if Mbappe came“. A fair statement considering the contribution of Vinicius to Madrid’s recent success. However, it also shows how unique a player Mbappe is considering the performance levels displayed by Vinicius.

Mbappe and Vinicius rank in the 99th for progressive carries and successful take-on. But Mbappe makes more progressive passes while scoring more goals. This shows both players have some similar strengths with Mbappe possessing qualities Vinicius does not. Another strength of Mbappe is his versatility. The Frenchman is comfortable across any of the attacking positions and could form a fearsome duo with the Brazilian. Also, factoring in his commercial power outside the game, Mbappe seems the perfect signing for Real Madrid.

Does Mbappe fit in with the new-look Madrid side?

Following the departure of Karim Benzema, Real Madrid has altered their game style a bit. Jude Bellingham is playing as the furthest midfielder and attacking the box. Kroos and Modric are not starting games together and the team is opting for a high-energy approach. As a result, players like Vinicius Junior and Fede Valverde are involved in more defensive duties and their output has declined.

Defending and pressing is not one of Mbappe’s strengths. However, for a generational talent like him, exceptions should be made, just like how Real Madrid made one 14 years ago by breaking the transfer record to sign Cristiano Ronaldo. It’s safe to say that the transfer worked out pretty well.
