In a recent talkSport podcast, host Simon Jordan sat down with former Chelsea midfielder Andy Townsend. The focus of their discussion? Chelsea’s current Premier League season, their unexpected decline in form, and their chances of lifting the Premier League title anytime soon. During the conversation, Jordan made a declaration, asserting boldly that Chelsea would claim the league title within the next couple of years. However, it was the response from the outspoken Chelsea legend, Andy Townsend, that truly stole the show.

Townsend surprisingly claimed, “That is some statement! I don’t see that at all. Not unless they sign Mbappe or someone at that level. Because they’re acquiring some very good young players, but, there’s never any guarantee that young players step up and make a difference.” But the explosives came when Townsend continued, “If Chelsea had Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham in this current team, would they win the league? Of course, they wouldn’t! No chance!

Townsend’s comments are a harsh reality check for the Blues, as they continue to battle their consistent woes on the pitch. Despite the new signings and bringing in a new manager in the face of Mauricio Pochettino, Chelsea has been lamented by the critics very often. With just 3 wins in 10 Premier League games this season, Townsend’s comments about Chelsea are not entirely wrong. Even with the addition of the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham, Chelsea will not be good enough to compete for the Premier League pinnacle.

Chelsea’s recent struggles in the Premier League

Andy Townsend’s scathing comments come after Chelsea’s disheartening performance in their latest Premier League clash. Chelsea faced a 1-0 loss against Brentford at the Stamford Bridge. Their performance in the match raised some serious concerns among fans and critics. Even though their performance against Arsenal in their previous match was commendable, the recent setback against Brentford was enough for Townsend to criticize the Londoners.
