“I Was in a Cleaning Service” – Aspiring To Play Alongside Gerard Pique, Wrexham Star Admits Facing a ‘Hard’ Time Juggling Odd Jobs To Make Ends Meet in Past

How inspiring a story can be? Ask Wrexham fans who enjoyed promotion from the National League after 15 years. Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney transformed the club from top to bottom, while several players played a vital role in the promotion hunt. One of them is the dynamic soccer wing-back, Jacob Mendy. Significantly, he contributed enormously to the team’s success and endured a happy 2022/23 campaign. However, his early-year struggles did not keep him in a happy place.

It is one of the most inspiring stories to come out of the club, as Mendy had earlier wished to play alongside Shakira’s ex-partner Gerard Pique. Starting his career in Spain with the Atletico Madrid youth team, Mendy is one of the key players in the club now. Hence, things are looking rosy for the player. But his story to the top is eye-opening.

Wrexham star opens up on tough struggles in early playing years

In a recent interview with Relevo, Mendy opened up about working with a cleaning service in the early stages of his career. His father wanted him to go to Spain. The playing careers of soccer players in Spain proved successful, and Mendy went for his father’s wishes. He mentioned, “It was all his idea. He said he saw more future there than in Spain. First, he came and then I came. We were working together, he got injured, and I had to work overtime to pay the rent and bring my brothers, too.”

A remarkable story that is hard to comprehend! Mendy worked hard to keep his family afloat and now lives after a dream season with Wrexham. He continued, “It was hard for me to get sleep because I worked early and then had to go to training. I was in a cleaning service, an IFEMA-style exhibition center in Madrid, and there I cleaned.”

In the current campaign, he scored four goals for the team. Ambitions are tight in the Mendy household, and he once stated his desire to play with Gerard Pique. He stated, “I would love to play with Piqué. Everything I know about football I learned in Spain, there everything relates to football”. The former Barcelona star was in the news for his high-profile split with Shakira.

While he started his career in Spain in 2015, Mendy loved the influential Pique during his yesteryears in Barcelona. The center-back defended superbly for Barcelona and won multiple league titles and European cups. Heading to the next season, Jacob hopes to keep Wrexham up in the EFL League Two. 

The club is on the rise, and with proper investment from the owners, we could probably see an influx of new players in the squad. But due to his humble beginnings, Mendy remains a sensational player for the club who loves to work hard. His career is just getting started.
