The last few days haven’t been easy for the USWNT squad. Expected to achieve their three-peat, they lost to Sweden in the R016. That unexpected loss garnered tons of criticism from the fanbase. Just hours ago, USWNT veteran Megan Rapinoe penned an emotional message for the fanbase. She stated that it was an honor to play for her country and that the national team was in ‘special hands’ as she hung up her boots.

Among the tons of criticism on social media, former US President Donald Trump joined the bandwagon too. He didn’t hold back while talking about the soccer veteran, as she missed a crucial penalty during the game.

Some weeks ago, Megan Rapinoe announced that she would retire at the end of the season. Which meant that this would be her last World Cup. Everyone was likely expecting a fairytale end to her career, but that doesn’t always happen, does it? Days after the USWNT’s tragic exit from the World Cup much earlier than anyone imagined, Rapinoe decided to address the loyal fanbase that she has.

On Instagram, she wrote, “This game is so beautiful, even in its cruelest moments.” She called her group current group of teammates very special and she was ‘immensely’ proud of each of them. Rapinoe continued, “This team is in special hands as I walk away, just like it always was, and always will be. Because that is what this team is all about. We lay it all out on the line every single time.”

Further, she referred to all the causes that she fought for throughout her career. In all likelihood, this could have been an indirect reply to Trump’s criticism. She mainly fought for gender equality and equal pay in sports. “Fighting with everything that we have, for everything we deserve, for every person we possibly can.” She concluded by saying another ‘thank you’ after stating that it was an ‘honor’ to represent the US.
