‘Welcome to Wrexham’ is a docu-series that was released in 2022. That docuseries cover the topic of how the celebrity took over the soccer club. Prior to this takeover, the celebrity duo had no experience in running a football club. The docuseries provide highlights of how the celebrity duo changed the fortunes of the Red Dragons and the Wrexham community.
Ryan Reynolds didn’t tell his wife Blake Lively about the takeover
A few months ago, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney were on the Jimmy Kimmel Live show. The Deadpool star revealed that he hadn’t told his wife that he was planning to buy a soccer club. Reynolds quotes, “I remember showing up and seeing Blake and saying, you know I have bad news and I have really bad news. The bad news is I slipped into someone’s DMs again. The really bad news is that, you know I might have bought a half of a fifth-tier national football league in Wales”.
On being asked what Blake’s reaction was, he jokingly added, “Not good Rob. No, not great. We’re still working through that one”.
During the course of the show, Reynolds spoke about the time when the celebrity duo was planning on taking over the Welsh side. Reynolds mentioned that he had never met his future co-owner of Wrexham before the takeover. All the business-related discussions always happened over the phone or via zoom.
An embarrassing moment at Wembley
The celebrity duo also joked about the time they were once watching a soccer game live at Wembley. Bromley and Wrexham were competing for the FA Trophy. The Welsh side was a goal down for the most part of the second half. With barely 3 minutes left in stoppage time, Wrexham equalized in the scrappiest of ways.
But a goal is a goal, right? The celebrity owners were busy in the stands celebrating the goal. However, they didn’t realize the referee had raised his flag for offside.

While the famous owner duo was celebrating, they turned toward English soccer legend David Beckham. Beckham was part of the audience as well for the game. The former England soccer star just stood there nodding his head while he watched the celebrity duo blindly celebrate the goal.
Wrexham AFC is one of the oldest soccer clubs in soccer history. Reynolds had once mentioned that he never wanted to buy a soccer club that was out there in the media with all the glamour. He mentioned that he was always looking for a club that was deeply embedded in the roots of the game.
