The pulling power of Manchester United to attract world-class players is second to none. A magnet for players to join the Red Devils, Sir Alex Ferguson won 13 Premier League Trophies and two Champions League. Yet, he missed out on one particular player in the early nineties. Sheffield Wednesday soccer star, David Hirst, scored goals for fun when the club was on top. But, when United called, the player thought about his future.

In fact, Ferguson remained keen to purchase the player that he failed six times. It’s unheard of for a manager to stop his quest as Hirst recalled the events that unfolded. When Ferguson wants something, he wants it done. The charismatic coach had a lot of controversies in the past, but he could have made David Hirst better.

Hirst became one of the most sought out strikers in 1992 after scoring 18 goals in 33 games. At that time, United wanted a forward to lead the line, and Sir Alex loosened his strings. According to Daily Star, Hirst explained how his former manager, the late great Trevor Francis, rejected the bid. David, in the meantime, talked to Sir Alex about joining the club and prepared to leave Sheffield. The club received a fax of $5.7 million and looked likely to leave the club. Yet, Francis stated, “I’m not selling you.”

Hirst explained, “One thing I never did in my career was knock on the manager’s door because I’m not in the team or I want more money. If you’re not happy with the contract, don’t sign it.” He explained the commitment and the training performances a top-class player would do for better results. Meaning, be a professional and make no demands to the club you play for!

But now, he regrets the decision took during that time. He continued, “Sitting here now, I should’ve banged the door down. It’s orchestrated now and if Man United are interested your agent will get you there by hook or by crook.”

No differences in financial packages between clubs back in the 90s!

With players hustling around to join the Middle Eastern clubs for more money, the nineties era had a rather subtle approach. Playing for the shirt was the top priority, which led to no significant wage inequality. Hirst explained, “I was playing for Sheffield Wednesday, third in the league, in Europe, cup finals, good wages, but a Man United player comes with a different tag. It is the one thing I regret.”

When Manchester United comes calling, players don’t reject. Just ask Andre Onana, Mason Mount, and Rasmus Højlund.
