Wrexham AFC surprised everyone last year when they signed 40-year-old Ben Foster as an emergency signing. While no one doubted the quality of Foster, the decision baffled soccer fans, as the former Manchester United goalie had already announced his retirement in September.

Foster, however, soon turned all the naysayers to his fans as his impeccable performances in the last 8 matches of the campaign played a big role in the Red Dragons earning promotion. In a recent interview, the veteran player was asked about the rationale behind joining the Welsh club. His answer so far has surprised a lot of people.

Ben Foster reveals the reason behind taking a U-turn on his retirement decision

In September last year, 40-year-old Ben Foster announced his retirement from soccer. But in March 2023, the goalie stunned everyone by coming out of retirement and joining the Red Dragons. When quipped the rationale behind this decision; Foster cited the adrenaline rush which the Red Dragons give as the reason behind it.

“I remember playing in the Premier League for Watford, looking around and thinking ‘I am not getting the same feelings anymore’, and that is a shame. But I got it straight back when I came here,” said Foster. The ex-West Brom man then stressed the phenomenal work that Wrexham fans do to hype their players up.

“It was only eight games, five of them were at home and the buzz I got playing here with the crowd, the atmosphere around the place in general, the team I was playing with, was just phenomenal,” opined the goalkeeper.

Foster is confident of performing better this season for Wrexham

Ben Foster honestly deserves more plaudits for his last season’s exploits with the Red Dragons. A player who was months into retirement came back and performed like nothing’s happened is super impressive.

Ben Foster in a presser pointed this out and hence felt that this upcoming season with the Welsh club will be even more impressive thanks to him having a full pre-season to prepare himself.

“I was really happy with my form, to be honest with you. But when you have got a whole pre-season behind you of solid goalkeeper training, hopefully you will see a bit more next season as well,” said the goalie optimistically.
