Only a few players are chosen to define greatness. It may be too early to call Erling Haaland one of the greatest players in the world, but there are very good signs for the future. The Norwegian scored a mammoth 55 goals for Manchester City in his first season to be awarded the 2023 UEFA Men’s Player of the Year. This includes goals across all competitions including the UEFA Champions League, the Premier League, and the FA Cup.

Haaland’s contribution helped Manchester City win all three competitions. Manchester City became only the second English team after Sir Alex Ferguson’s 1998- 99 Manchester United team to win the treble. The Citizens finally lost a trophy to Arsenal in the FA Community Shield earlier this month.

After winning the recent UEFA Player of the Year award, Haaland spoke about what winning these trophies and awards meant to him. When asked about how it felt after winning so much in his first season at City, Haaland said that it feels good to win the treble at 22 and live his dream. He said, “Im kind of living my dream, This was my dream when I was young and to do it together with my teammates is something special and I’m happy.

Haaland topped his teammate and partner in crime Kevin De Bruyne and Lionel Messi to win the award. He is more motivated than ever before, he spoke saying “It gives me so much motivation to keep on working to achieve more of the trophies.” Behind Haaland’s effectiveness, and also City’s success, is one man, the managerial icon, Pep Guardiola.

What goes on between Haaland and Pep?

Haaland’s award-winning coach Pep Guardiola was one person, who always pushed him. The Spanish manager became the first coach to win trebles in two different leagues winning the UEFA Men’s Coach of the Year.

“Good Question,” said the striker while laughing when he was asked about Pep always imploring him on the field, and who is the scarier between Pep and his father. With a light note, he claimed both of them to be scary and said that he likes Pep shouting at him. Haaland said in a joshing tone ” I like when Pep [Guardiola] shouts at me. He tries to get something in my brain he doesn’t think I have.”
