Tim Weah had a night to forget for the USMNT earlier tonight, with the player seeing red against Panama. His booking came quite costly to the team as the USMNT suffered a shocking 2-1 defeat at the hands of Panama in their second fixture of the Copa America. This is a massive blow to the team’s qualification chances as Gregg Berhalter’s men now need to secure points against Uruguay if they want to move to the knockouts.

Tim Weah reacted to his red card on his Instagram with a story following the game, with the player apologizing for his action. In his Instagram story, he wrote, “I’m sorry I let my lead and my country down. A moment of frustration led to irreversible consequences, and for that, I am deeply sorry to my teammates, coaches, family, and our fans. Moving forward, I am committed to learn from this experience and not allowing an opponent to provoke me and work to regain the trust of my team and supporters.”

Things broke down in the first half with Tim Weah picking up a red card in the 17th minute. The player let his frustrations get the best of him following Matt Turner’s injury as he swung at Panama’s Roderick Miller. This didn’t go down well with Ivan Barton who did not hesitate in sending Weah off.

Herculez Gomez rips into Tim Weah for his costly act

Multiple former players were fuming with Tim Weah after his red card cost the USMNT the match. Ex-USMNT star Herculez Gomez was amongst the first hit at the midfielder for his costly mistake.

Gomez spoke on Weah’s red card as he called the player out for losing his calm. The ex-USMNT star stated, That’s such a dumb thing to do. Tim Weah has to know better. Regardless of the Panamanian player making a meal of it or not, you cannot do that!” He further added, “This is dumber and potentially more costly than the Red Sergino Dest received vs Trinidad & Tobago. Cannot believe Weah did this.”

Tim Weah will now have to sit out the team’s remaining group-stage game as the USMNT takes on Uruguay. Gregg Berhalter’s side will have to pick the win in their last game if they want to make it through to the knockouts. This will be an uphill climb for the side and only time will tell if the hosts are ready for what could be their biggest challenge this summer.
