Emma Hayes almost quit—Is the pressure on female managers in sports too intense?

Emma Hayes is known for her calm and composed approach. Regardless of playing in a tournament as big as the Olympics, coach Hayes is an advocate of ‘having fun.’ But, does it really mean a coaching job has always been rosy for the former Chelsea boss? Well, she was a serial winner in Chelsea as well. Even so, as the British boss recalls, there was a time when the vitriol associated with a coaching job wore her out.

Coach Hayes’ Chelsea job seemed like she had to go to work every day, just to win major titles. She won a fifth straight WSL title with the London club before joining the USWNT. However, the winner’s job was quite taxing. “Was I happy to do it? I don’t think my dad gave me a choice,” said Emma Hayes during her recent appearance on The Sports Agents podcast.

“That’s the brutal truth, and he knew at the end that I had enough,” she added. Continuing, the Team USA coach recalled telling her dad she couldn’t continue being in the spotlight because of her coaching job. “‘Dad I’m not doing it. I don’t want another headline written tomorrow, another clickbait moment for some of the right reasons,” Hayes added.

Emma Hayes’ final Chelsea season hit an infamous bump when said player-player relationships in the team were “inappropriate.” Several of the coach’s Chelsea players frowned at the statement. Likewise, Hayes apologized and admitted regret for her comments subsequently. Besides, the USWNT boss drew daggers with the Arsenal boss, Jonas Eidevall.

After a heated clash, she said Eidevall showed “male aggression” and she appeared to shove him in a good deal of footage.

The Arsenal coach fired back at Hayes, saying she countered aggression with aggression. Besides, the renowned winner of a coach also took heat when she prematurely said that Chelsea could no longer compete in the title race. However, many viewed it as the coach’s tactics to make Manchester City more complacent. Tactics or not, City lost the trophy to Chelsea, and coach Hayes left London a victor.

Anyhow, the victor had to pay the prize by being the talk of the town for wrong and right reasons. And that’s perhaps why the cool and calm Hayes felt like she had had enough.
