England head coach Gareth Southgate stunned everyone with his squad selection for the upcoming Euros. Much to the fan’s surprise, Southgate uncharacteristically left former captain Jordan Henderson out of the squad. Manchester United star Marcus Rashford was also among those who got the axe after a rough club season. Despite some initial disagreement, most English fans are on board with the manager’s decision. While it’s bad to see two of the best English players get snubbed, with the talent England has on their hands, no one’s place on the team is guaranteed.
Former England captain Kyle Walker stood behind the manager’s decision to snub the duo. Talking on his ‘You’ll never beat Kyle Walker’ podcast, the defender stated, “If the gaffer thinks it’s the right squad to pick, I believe and I fully trust in what he does. He’s been fantastic since the minute he has walked through the door.”
He continued, “Obviously, when you have shared such great moments with the likes of Marcus and Hendo and been on a journey together, you do feel a little bit sad they are not going to be there. But the manager thinks that’s the best thing for the country and I am fully behind him and fully back him in that.”

The defender talked about the expectations of the national team stating, “It’s human nature – you do something once, and it doesn’t go well, and you’re cautious. Maybe that’s what the turning point is with this England team now. Before you used to be a little bit scared to go and then make a mistake playing for England, but now the amount of talent we’ve got in the team is incredible and we should go, and do something special this summer.”
The Three Lions came close to winning the Euros in 2020. Gareth Southgate’s side seemed the favorite for the title, as they made their way into the finals in front of their home crowd. However, the side was stunned by Italy in the penalties. The team will hope to produce better results this season as they hope to make history after missing the chance to do so four years ago!
