Liverpool’s home ground, Anfield, has historically been a nightmare for any rival. The carnage at the stadium is so intense that rivals have even blown up their UEFA Champions League lead against Liverpool. Last night, Manchester United took to Anfield for the classic Premier League fixture. It is safe to say that the Devils withstood Anfield’s hellfire, as Liverpool settled for a goalless draw. After the match, United’s goalkeeper Andre Onana fired back at the booing Anfield crowd.

Andre Onana has seldom shied away from unleashing his outspoken self out there. If not to a reckless Anfield crowd, then to whom else will Onana be outspoken? Though Onana took a nice dig at the Liverpool fans, he did not rant. The 27-year-old chose a subtle and composed response instead.

Liverpool fans at Anfield have managed to perplex a man of Sir Alex Ferguson’s stature. But not Andre Onana, it seems. Onana and Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United were unsurprisingly welcomed with boos and all sorts of hostility at Anfield. The press followed its routine practice and asked the United goalie to comment on the Anfield atmosphere. “I felt nothing,” said Andre Onana, dismissing the mythical air that surrounds the Anfield crowd in soccer lore. His response seems fit, as he delivered the best for MUFC amid the carnage at Liverpool’s home.

Throughout the match, Liverpool had the upper hand against the guests. Jurgen Klopp’s side had a 69% possession. They fired 34 shots, out of which eight were directly on MUFC’s goal face. Thanks to Onana’s heroics, each of those shots failed to hit the back of the net. United, on the other hand, could shoot only once on target. Therefore, it was indeed an unbothered Andre Onana who saved the Devils in an otherwise one-sided campaign.

Last night, Liverpool boasted about their largest crowd in 60 years. Nonetheless, the team failed to deliver. Hence, Klopp’s side lost their first position in the Premier League table to Arsenal. Meanwhile, Andre Onana became the first goalkeeper to maintain a clean sheet against Liverpool since April 2023. Yes, Liverpool has not gone goalless this season at any stadium, let alone Anfield. Therefore, Onana’s clean sheet is indeed a worthy addition to an impressive resume in the making.
