“I Feel Motivated” – Nearing 200 Caps for Portugal, Cristiano Ronaldo Not Ready to ‘Give Away His Seat for Free’ as He Enjoys National Team Presence

After ending the domestic season, it was time for international duty as Portugal summoned Cristiano Ronaldo. The Al Nassr skipper flew to Portugal to catch up with teammates and play a few crucial matches. With the upcoming Euros, Roberto Martinez’s side is already looking to cement their chances in the tournament.

The 2016 Euro winner will be looking to lead his side to an empathic final once again. While he may turn 39, the CR7 is eager to play for a long time. In fact, he recently revealed he isn’t ready to give up his national spot easily.

Cristiano Ronaldo will not give the National team spot easily

With growing age, players readily think of retirement from either domestic or international soccer. However, for Ronaldo, it’s different. Despite being 38, the No. 7 looks to continue at full pace, especially when it comes to international duty. As stated by CNN, the striker revealed he would love to continue playing for his country and won’t give up his place easily.

“I think I’m still doing well, I’m still helping, scoring goals, doing good performances and that’s the most important thing. As long as I feel motivated and feel that the people around me enjoy my presence, my participation and leadership, I will not give up the selection. As Bruno Alves used to say, he wouldn’t give away his seat for free. I’m not going to do it,” he said while stating an example of the former Portugal defender, Bruno Alves.

The striker insisted that he likes to feel useful and become a great asset to the team, as it gives him “pride and motivation.” He revealed sometimes he gets nervous playing for the national team. “When I hear the hymn I always get nervous. It’s not the same as the first few times, but I still feel it.”

While adding it is a positive sign, he said, “Representing the national team is the height of your career, being able to represent your family, country, friends…” Already nearing his 200 caps with Portugal, when asked if he wanted to do more, he responded optimistically. He also wants to “continue to live the moment.” After an emphatic victory against Bosnia, they’ll be playing against Iceland.

Portugal looking for another easy win

Portugal recently kicked off this month’s Euro qualification fixtures on a high note. The Seleção rallied for an empathic 3-0 win against Bosnia and Herzegovina. A goal from Bernardo Silva and a brace from Bruno Fernandes helped them clinch an emphatic win. The skipper, Ronaldo, failed to get his name on the scoresheet.

However, he’ll be looking to do so in the next fixture against Iceland. Roberto Martinez’s side is the topper of Group J with nine points. On the other hand, Åge Hareide’s side is sitting in fifth place with three points. Both sides will be looking to win the fixture in order to increase their chances of qualifying for the Euros.
