Legendary defender Dani Alves is not going through the best phase of his life. The Brazilian icon is currently facing prison trial after having been accused of sexual assault. Yet, his friend Neymar came to his aid by offering significant financial assistance. Recently, Neymar‘s dad opened up about the gesture and stated it was a burden he preferred to have. What could he be implying?

Being the third richest soccer player in the world ($112 million in earnings), finances have never been an issue for the Brazilian forward. It is worth noting that his father handles many of his off-field activities and it is likely that he is following his son’s instructions in the Alves case.

Neymar Santos Sr. recently detailed the decision to provide financial assistance to Alves. He said, “The family asked us for help. Daniel didn’t have the money to defend himself, and the deadline for paying the defense was expiring. Think about it, at no time could I deny help to a friend who is trying to defend himself against an accusation.” Dani Alves was a key figure in helping Neymar settle in Barcelona after moving from Santos and was also a teammate at PSG and Brazil. It seems the Neymar family still holds the relationship dear.

The amount provided by the family is around $164k. Moreover, as far as Neymar Sr. is concerned, the legendary full-back is innocent until proven guilty. He explained, “Daniel is in pre-trial detention and has not been tried. To date, the presumption of innocence is valid throughout the world. I couldn’t turn my back… What if the court decides that Daniel is innocent? I preferred having the burden of believing in a friend than turning my back on someone“, as compiled by A Trombeta.

Despite being the second most decorated soccer player in history, the fact that Alves had to resort to external financial aid might sound surprising. However, it is a result of his issues with his former wife.

The intervention from Neymar was a necessity for Alves. As per reports, the full-back has been sued by his ex-partner Dinorah Santana for non-payment of alimony. This led the authorities to freeze his considerable assets and resources. Incidentally, it was back in June that he had removed Santana from managing his assets.

The significance of the amount paid lies in the prison sentence. Previously, the jail term was expected to be between 4-15 years. However, by paying the 6-figure sum, Alves & his team are expecting a 9-year term, if proven guilty. The case would be decided in a trial in a Barcelona court from Feb 5 to 7.
