Diego Maradona is a legend and known for his decorated career with Argentina. He had a 17-year-old career and scored 34 goals for his nation, winning them the FIFA World Cup in 1986. Often put on the list of the greatest players to ever play the sport along with Pele. His ‘hands of god’ brought glory to his nation. Players all around the world, like Messi, Neymar, and Mbappe, adored and respected him. Legendary soccer manager Jose Mourinho is also a big fan of the golden boy.

José Mourinho, while talking about the late legend in a podcast, expressed his emotions about not being able to attend the funeral. He remembered the respect he had for Maradona and how they met several times.

While talking about Maradona, Mourinho said, “My friend was not just a question of respect to that incredible player. Again was not that. Maradona player here everybody around the world knows. I spent many, many days with him. He come to me when I was Madrid. He come to me when I was inter in Manchester. We shared for many years one of our sponsors. We met in very relaxed situations outside football….”

Talking about how good of a human Maradona was, Mourinho added, “I understood the man, I understood that guy, not the god on the pitch. Just a guy like all of us with great qualities and also problems. And I love the guy. I couldn’t go to his funeral due to work and, of course, Argentina. But I told myself every time I go to Napoli… Maybe you have a statue later. I think outside the stadium. But that place there in the middle of heart of Napoli. In the middle of the people that used to love him. I think is a place I will go every season.

Mourinho visited Maradona’s mural in Napoli ahead of a match of AC Roma against Napoli in April 2022. Maradona played for Napoli for 7 years and help the club win two Serie A title, a UEFA Cup and Coppa Italia. Maradona is a hero in Napoli as he leads the team in its golden period. When he passed away in 2020, the whole city mourned as much as his hometown in Argentina. AC Roma posted the video on their twitter account. The police escorted him and he presented flowers at the mural. Mourinho also looked at other tributes presented to the legend.
