Emily Fox snubs NWSL despite historic CBA—Is the league failing to retain top talent?

The planned outlook of the NWSL looks promising for player welfare, security, and recognition. With revolutionary changes planned for the league, women’s soccer keeps growing every passing year. It’s refreshing to see them getting equal attention like men’s soccer. Thus, multiple players want to enter the league as it promises a financially viable package. One such player who can leave Europe is USWNT right-back Emily Fox.

The Arsenal player became one of the go-to players at the Paris Olympics. Her dribbling skills and a fantastic reading of the game make her one of the most sought-after players worldwide. Of course, a move to NWSL is on the cards. Yet she pledged her allegiance to the North London club. With all the player-friendly rule changes in the NWSL, she talked to Arsenal media about her aspirations of returning to her homeland. Like the famous reference, she has unfinished business!

Emily Fox mentioned, “I’m really committed to Arsenal. I’m saying that because it’s 100% how I feel! I can’t imagine going anywhere else,” wanting to stay in Arsenal after arriving last season. She made 10 appearances in the previous campaign and provided 2 assists. However, with the glorious Emma Hayes leading Chelsea from the front, they won their fifth consecutive WSL title, pushing Arsenal to third.

The Arsenal women’s team though are going places similar to the men’s team. Moreover, the WSL receives huge attendance figures for women’s games. In a game against Manchester United, around 60,160 fans attended the match to see the Gunners on top. Those figures are monumental when one compares them to the NWSL. Yet, Emily Fox understands why players remain tempted to jump the ship.

She continued, “I think in terms of players and coaches going to other leagues, that will definitely happen. Especially just in terms of the NWSL, with the CBA that just passed, that would be more appealing. And there’s also the WSL, with us getting sold-out crowds. There are a lot of things in both leagues that can attract players.”

The league in the U.S.A. ran differently from what we witness in Europe. The league decided to withdraw the draft system and players have a say in where they live. Earlier, teams drafted players and the uncertainty that comes with relocation hurts the players. But, as they abolished the draft system, there is more flexibility.

Likewise, the player salaries have increased as the minimum league salary will double throughout the CBA and climb from $48,500 to $82,500 in 2030. All these changes offer a sensational financial package and security for players to consider.

To sum up, the incoming regulations of the NWSL work well for all parties. However, Emily Fox remains committed to the Arsenal project and wants more success. Is she right to stay at Arsenal or should she move to NWSL?
