Last season, Arsenal was undeniably the most impressive team in the Premier League. While many might argue that the Gunners failed to win the league from a favorable position, their presence in the top 2 itself is an achievement considering the constitution of their team.

Mikel Arteta groomed a young and dynamic team with immense talent and took them all the way to the end competing against the much experienced and stacked Manchester City. Only a man-manager with an emotional connection with players would have pulled this off. Aaron Ramsdale’s latest revelations confirm this sentiment.

Arsenal ended the pre-World Cup break on a high by being the table toppers. After initial criticisms over the price tag, Aaron Ramsdale was finally getting the plaudits for his skills. Moreover, he was also included in England’s World Cup squad. To make matters even better, his wife also got pregnant at this point in time. Everything was going right for the lad until life happened to him.

For starters; England’s national team had a poor outing at the World Cup, leading to widespread criticism. Things took an uglier turn on their flight back home when his wife suffered a miscarriage. As expected, the young goalkeeper was devastated. “There’s really no way that I can describe the pain of that six-hour flight back to London, even now,” wrote Ramsdale in the Players’ Tribune describing his pain.

After reaching home, Ramsdale shared it with his family, teammates, and manager. Upon hearing this, Mikel Arteta was extremely understanding. As per Ramsdale, Arteta did everything under his power to create a secure environment for the goalie, while Arsenal was going through a neck-to-neck battle with Manchester City. He was fantastic about everything. Even in the middle of the title race, with so much pressure on the club, he asked me if I needed some time off to deal with everything. Mikel went above and beyond to make sure me and my family were OK,” shared Ramsdale.

When you have work that you love doing, you would never search for an escape. In fact, your work becomes your escape in tough situations. This is exactly what happened with Ramsdale as well. A few days after the devastating news, the Gunners were playing against derby rivals, Tottenham Hotspur. As expected, Ramsdale wanted to play to distract himself.

“Three days later, we were playing Spurs in the derby, and for me that was the only way to get my mind off things. Football has always been my escape,” said Aaron Ramsdale.

As luck would have it, Aaron Ramsdale and Arsenal won the match 2-0 with a near-perfect performance, but the goalkeeper had a bottle thrown at him post-match. He couldn’t even celebrate the win, as he was pulled up by the police for a statement. Despite all the odds, the goalkeeper kept on delivering stunning performances and was a key reason for Arsenal’s longevity in last season’s title race. Truly inspirational!
