Ever since Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds took over Wrexham, the Red Dragons have only climbed higher, both on the table and in aspiration. “Hey Wrexham AFC fans, I recently learned that we just crossed 1 million followers on Instagram. To celebrate, I am officially making you all citizens of Wrexham. Back in November 2020 when Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds brought Wrexham for $2.5 million, people didn’t even know where the club was located. Cut to 2023 July and the club has more than a million followers on Instagram. What’s inspiring about the growth is the smart allocation of resources by the media coverage team of the Welsh club.
The media team of the Red Dragons was in sync with the changing social media algorithm, as they focused their efforts completely on short-form content. While most soccer clubs derive major interaction from Facebook, data shows how the Welsh team instead focused on TikTok and Instagram to gain massive success.
