The USA Soccer Federation has been very serious since day one about making the women’s soccer team the best in the world. However, it looks like the league is not progressing rapidly with the national team. The list of IFFHS Women’s World’s Best Clubs in 2023 was released. It saw Barcelona top the list, and the American club go down the ladder. 

The list also highlights that there is room for improvement to enhance the league’s quality. Let’s now take a look at how the NWSL clubs fared compared to the other clubs.

FC Barcelona women’s team topped the IFFHS table after a brilliant 2022-23 season

The women’s team of Barcelona has continued to exceed the expectations of the media and former players. Last season, the Spanish giants won a treble stunningly. They won the Women’s Champions League, Supercopa de España Femenina, and Primera División. Hence, it is no surprise that IFFHS announced them as the best women’s club of 2023. Nonetheless, there was a tremendous surprise for the American club disappointingly. No NWSL clubs were included in the top 40 of the list announced by the respected organization.

It is the second year in a row the Spanish giants have topped the table. The domination of Barcelona also shows how the ownership has continued to take it seriously despite the financial problems in recent years. In terms of other clubs, several clubs climbed up the rankings. On the other, some clubs saw a downfall compared to the last year. One of the most notable ones was the Swedish club Hacken. They finished the 2023 season on 10th ranking and had finished 36th in 2022.

American clubs see a downfall in their rankings as none rank in the top 40

The US clubs might not be in the top 40 list, yet several clubs made the top 200. The soccer clubs from the US hope to climb the ladder and make a difference in the next season.
