Sometimes in soccer, it feels like you’ve done everything right but still end up with nothing in your hands. The same is the case with Wrexham’s manager, Phil Parkinson, who was in disbelief after a clash against Barnsley. Parkinson was left wondering how his team didn’t manage to come away with anything from the game. The frustration was clear as he reflected on what felt like a missed opportunity, with his team giving their all and still ending up losing.
“How we haven’t got something out of that game I’ll never know,” said Parkinson still shaking his head while continuing, “Some of the football was really good in difficult conditions and the lads have given us absolutely everything,” While appreciating the outstanding efforts shown by the players to get back into the game, Parkinson was proud of the team’s resilience but did not shy away from the regret of not converting chances into goals: “We had things cleared off the line and we had headers from five yards not gone in the back of the net”
“I think the first half started well, we controlled the first 11 minutes, and out of nowhere, the lad has come inside on his right foot which we knew and we’re disappointed with that,” he further added, highlighting the good first half start by the team. Wrexham’s retaliation in the second half was evident by their efforts, which unfortunately were not fruitful. “The keeper has made some unbelievable saves. We could have been more clinical in situations,” Parkinson explained, acknowledging the key role played by Barnsley’s goalkeeper in denying Wrexham’s attacking efforts.

Parkinson also admitted that even when Wrexham trailed 2-0, he believed they could still pull off a victory. “Honestly, I was thinking we were going to win 3-2. I wasn’t thinking about a draw, I thought we’d go and win the game 3-2.” Despite the defeat at the Oakwell, Wrexham are proud of their efforts. Although the result feels like a bitter pill to swallow, they would still look out for the positives to take away from the game.
